Destination: Jazirat al Hamra- Ras al Khaima's Ghost Town

We had the chance to visit an old fishing village in Ras al Khaima, one of the seven Emirates in the UAE. Jazirah Al Hamra, which means the ‘Red Island’, is one of the oldest occupied sites in the UAE. A large deposit of shells middens accumulated over a long period of time showed that the area offered a certain degree of stability and was inhabited regularly by the semi-nomadic groups. This town has had its heyday and was one of the key factors trade during its time. Today, the entire village has been practically abandoned. Residents now live just a stone throw away from the village in their modern air-conditioned homes which greatly contrast their ancestor's lifestyles. Although most of the ancient houses are practically reduced to rubbles, there is still a great number of buildings that are standing under the heat of the arabian sun but hiding in the shadows of their former glory.
